As part of the 6th International Action of the World March of Women (WMW), Mongolian herder women came together from June 27–29, 2025 in Umnugobi Province for the forum “Empowering Herder Women: Challenges, Solutions and Opportunities.” The event was co-organized by the Mongolian Gobi Nomadic Herders’ Association and the World Alliance of Mobile Indigenous Peoples (WAMIP), bringing visibility to the struggles and knowledge of women living in pastoral and nomadic territories.
This grassroots forum created a rare feminist space for herder women to collectively examine the political, environmental, and social challenges that shape their lives. Participants highlighted urgent issues such as the expansion of mining operations threatening grazing lands and water sources, barriers to education and health services in remote regions, and the growing pressure of climate crises on pastoral livelihoods.
Intergenerational and roundtable dialogues allowed elders to share their “Golden Advice,” offering traditional climate adaptation strategies grounded in centuries of nomadic knowledge. Discussions focused on strengthening women’s autonomy in pastoral resource management and advancing resistance-based solutions that prioritize community control, ecological protection, and collective survival.
These activities reaffirmed pastoral life not only as a cultural identity but also as a political act of resistance against displacement, extractivism, and ecological violence.
This forum marks another step in the 6th International Action’s commitment to amplifying rural, Indigenous, and nomadic women’s voices in the struggle for climate justice, land rights, and a feminist economy built on solidarity and collective survival.
