As part of its 6th International Action, the World March of Women (WMW) organizes the Mongolian Gobi Nomadic Herders’ Association and the World Alliance of Mobile Indigenous Peoples (WAMIP) in hosting a forum: “Empowering Herder Women: Challenges, Solutions and Opportunities” from June 27–29, 2025 in Umnugobi Province, Mongolia.
This grassroots event will elevate the voices of Mongolian herder women as they tackle urgent issues like the impacts of mining operations on pastures and water sources on environmental justice, barriers to health and education in remote nomadic communities, and economic resilience in the face of climate disruption. Through intergenerational and roundtable discussions, elders will share their “Golden Advice” on traditional climate adaptation strategies.
The forum’s main focus is on resistance-based and collective survival strategies, like political trainings that improve self-sufficient pastoral resource management. Through a special exhibition that prioritizes community-controlled production, herder women will share traditional subsistence techniques, such as dairy processing and food sovereignty methods. Participants will also experience immersive cultural exchanges, including camel farm visits, mare milking demonstrations, airag preparation, and excursions to sacred sites like Yolyn Am and the Flaming Cliffs (Bayanzag). These actions reclaim pastoral lifestyles as a form of political protest against displacement and ecological brutality.
